THE GROWING

Temporal Dimensions of Colour

Oceanic and terrestrial gardens to grow.

Plants, microalgae and cyanobacteria gift us a lot of the oxygen we breathe. Hence, the invitation for especially microorganisms into our urban environments serves as a materialised acknowledgment of the relationship that we fundamentally already share.

We ask ourselves: How can contemporary colouring and dyeing practices rethink our relationship not only to matter but in consequence to the surrounding where colour is released from? And what are the circumstances that allow it to appear? The passing of time plays a major role since the organisms operate on their own timeline which doesn’t necessarily match ours. After all, there are so many different ways to measure time, a plant infused with pigment from spring to spring is only one of them.

Hence, gardens to observe. What bearings of colour do the plants, microalgae and cyanobacteria hold? Why do they come into being and when and how are they visible?

And ultimately gardens to care. How to cope with the needs of gardens- watering, nutrients, harvesting? Culturing plants and microorganisms requires attention over time and demands frequent awareness which becomes part of the educational environment. Cohabitation as teacher.
